WILDTRUST (https://wildtrust.co.za/) is a South African not-for-profit, public benefit, non-governmental organisation, with a vision of “a thriving and resilient world” and implements its work through two programmes: WILDLANDS
(focused on terrestrial systems) and WILDOCEANS (focused on coastal and marine systems). The primary interlinked goals of WILDOCEANS to deliver impact towards a thriving resilient world are: 1) To protect and restore marine
biodiversity, and 2) To build resilience for coastal communities. Strategic cross-cutting elements, to enhance sustainability and impact, underpin our work: future leader development, science and knowledge generation, support to decision-makers and management authorities, coastal community support, ocean awareness and communication, and advocacy and campaigning.
uThukela Marine Protected Area Ecosystem-based Adaptation Project is a 5-year project that aims to build socio-ecological resilience to climate change for the people and biodiversity of the uThukela MPA, and its associated coastal climate-relevant ecosystems and vulnerable communities. The project aims to build conservation capacity and infrastructure, conduct ecosystem surveys and monitoring, restore, and protect climate-relevant ecosystems,
support effective management of the MPA, deliver benefits and improved livelihoods for communities living adjacent to the MPA, and improve resilience to climate change through nature-based solutions. Integral to achievement of these objectives is the assessment of the financial outlook for management of the MPA, and associated stakeholder engagement, and the identification and initiation of viable sustainable finance mechanisms to support long-term community involvement in MPA monitoring/management activities.
Key Performance Areas: The MPA Sustainable Finance and Business Development Coordinator’s responsibilities and duties will include: MPA management and stakeholder engagement financial needs assessment and planning, MPA costs and benefits analysis, development of a MPA Sustainable Financing Strategy, Feasibility Assessments for potential sustainable finance mechanisms identified, Identification and initiation of pilot sustainable financing
mechanisms for important management and stakeholder engagement activities. Facilitating community business ideas Activities and tasks will include: Literature review and synthesis; Research and surveys, desktop and in the
field; Sourcing and managing relevant of document and data collections; Organizing and participating in relevant meetings and workshops; Preparing reports, policy briefs, articles and scientific publications; Organising and/or
contributing to learning webinars, workshops and training sessions; Interacting and communicating with a wide range of stakeholders, including government and MPA management officials and project partners.
Requirements: We are looking for a dynamic early career professional, preferably with a Master’s Degree (at least an Honours degree). The ideal candidate should have at least 3 years of experience in relevant disciplines such as financing, economics and/or business development. Additional experience in social development or ecology would be advantageous. Knowledge of the history of South African Marine Protected Areas, and the legislation, policy and
governance relating to them would be an advantage. Good co-ordination and organisational ability, research design and execution skills and experience, data management and analysis capability, and excellent speaking and writing
skills, are essential. Experience with report writing, scientific publications, GIS, monitoring and surveillance would be advantageous. Driving license is essential.
