Key Performance Areas: WILDOCEANS has been working towards unlocking the Marine Protected Area (MPA) expansion process in South Africa through a campaign called Ocean iMPAct (@oceanimpactsa), which aims to support the establishment of 10% MPA network and pave the way for African states to support a global target of 30% marine protection by 2030. The MPA Project
Scientist’s responsibilities and duties will include: Providing scientific support to the MPA project team, including literature review and synthesis and management of document collections; Source and curate data relevant to MPA expansion and effective management of MPAs, and develop data management systems including use of GIS and remote sensing; Co-ordinating, organizing and participating in research, policy, monitoring, and project meetings; Preparing reports, policy briefs, articles and scientific publications; Contributing to learning webinars, workshops and training sessions for the project team, MPA managers and youth; Interacting and communicating with a wide range of stakeholders, including government officials; Providing and interpreting relevant scientific and technical information to communications education awareness teams; Supervising a Research Assistant
Requirements: We are looking for a dynamic early career marine scientist, with a minimum of a MSc degree in marine biology/ecology/science. Knowledge of the history of South African Marine Protected Areas, and the legislation, policy and governance relating to them would be an advantage. Good co-ordination and organisational ability, data management and analysis capability, and excellent speaking and writing skills, are essential. Experience with report writing, scientific publications, GIS, monitoring and surveillance would be advantageous. The ideal candidate should have at least 3 years of experience in science related to MPAs and ocean protection. This is an 18-month contract position, working with the MPA project team, reporting to the Project Manager.
